Peruvian presidential candidate Ollanta Humala confirmed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is “democratic” and reiterated that he would nationalize Peru´s energy resources if elected. “Mr. Chávez is a democrat. He has won the electoral process”, stated Humala.
At the same time he denied having a special relationship with Chávez and deplored Chávez´s decision to withdraw Venezuela’s ambassador from Peru.
In regards to his statements of nationalizing the energy sector Humala stated, “Nationalizing is a way of serving the country”. He also stated that foreign investors are also welcome in Peru provided they “comply with certain requirements: transfer technology and create jobs”.
