Organic coffee grown in the mountains of the Peruvian department of Piura has made significant inroads into the international market in the last five years. The coffee is being exported to European countries such as Germany, England, Holland, France, Belgium, Italia and Switzerland as well as the U.S. and Canada.
“Thinking that in 1997, our first year of exportation, our exports totaled 20 tons and went to Germany and the U.S. In 2005 we exported nearly 2,000 tons that represented earning of $6 million and in 2006 we are expecting to grow by another 25%”, explained José Rojas Hernández of Cepicafe (Piura Coffee Growers Association).
“The trend in Europe to prefer this coffee began in the 1990s and the growers of Piura were trained to grow organic coffee where they did not use any type of fertilizer or chemicals,” indicated Rojas.
The goal of the association (Cepicafe) is to surpass 2,500 tons of coffee exported.
