Bolognesi player Masakatsu Sawa celebrates the game-winning goal against Chilean club Colo Colo in last night’s Copa Sudamericana round of sixteen.
(LIP-wb) When it comes to international football play, Peru’s national team and Peruvian clubs are usually facing an early elimination; except for 2003 when Cusco club Cienciano won the Copa Sudamericana. Last night however was different.
Coronel Bolognesi from Tacna scored a triumphant come-from-behind victory in the Copa Sudamericana round of sixteen against heavy favorite Colo Colo from Chile.
After a scoreless first half at the "Jorge Basadre" stadium in Tacna in which the Chileans were the better team as most expected, intensity took off in the second half.
Colo Colo went ahead in the 51. minute after Fernandez released a missile which goalie Penny could defuse but only by letting the ball bounce. Jérez was there to put the rebound into "El Bolo’s" net.
What seemed to be the first dagger for Bolognesi turned out to be a motivational boost instead. They never let their heads hanging and efforts were rewarded with Johan Fano’s equalizer 12 minutes later. Fano scored with a magnificent header after a corner kick.
The Chileans seemed a little shocked and Bolognesi took advantage. Japanese import Masakatsu Sawa put “El Bolo” ahead with a diving header in the 80. minute, whipping the crowd into a frenzy.
Colo Colo tried hard to even the match in the last ten minutes but the Peruvians from Tacna bravely fought off the late surge of attacks.
The second leg of the two-game series will be played next Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Santiago de Chile.
The Copa Sudamericana is the second most important competition for South American club teams, the first being the Copa Libertadores. It is comparable to the UEFA Cup in European club soccer competition, with the exception that some teams can play in both the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores. The winner plays the Copa Libertadores’ champion for the Recopa Sudamericana.
