(October 16, 2006) Government spokesperson Ricardo Lagos W. announced shortly after 9:00pm Sunday night that Chile will abstain in the upcoming vote for a temporary position on the UN Security Council, ending months of speculation on whether Chile would support Venezuela’s bid.

“With all of the information that we had today, neither of the present candidates could achieve consensus in Chile,” said Lagos W. “Without this needed consensus, the government has decided to abstain.”

Peru announced two weeks ago that it would abstain from voting in the October 16 United Nations Security Council elections, and Peruvian Foreign Secretary José García Belaúnde went on to suggest Chile should launch a bid for the position. (ST, October 3).
