(LIP-jl) — The United States Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, urged the U.S. Congress to ratify free trade agreements with Peru and Colombia yesterday.

Rice said that doing so would be inline with U.S. President George Bush’s plan for growth in the region.

"Let us sign the free trade agreements with Colombia and Peru, and let us complete the negotiations with Panama. We hope that Congress will support these important agreements," said Rice before the US House Committee of Foreign Affairs.

The US diplomat, who was called on to explain the US 2008 budget, said that increased support of institutions from the Andean region would channel more resources to their populations.

She further explained that although the 2008 US budget includes cuts in the areas of development, it does include significant increases in resources that will generate economic support to the region.
