New 7 Wonders ceremony not to air in Peru

(LIP-jl) — The July 7 ceremony that will reveal the names of the New 7 Wonders, of which Peru’s Machu Picchu is one of the favorites to place within the top 7, will not be televised by Peruvian television according to a representative from the Cuzco campaign ‘Vota por Machu Picchu" (Vote for Machu Picchu).

Moises Bendezu, one of the chief promoters of the ‘Vote for Machu Picchu’ campaign, stated that organizers from the New7Wonders Foundation have informed that no Peruvian television station has subscribed to the event which is scheduled to take place early next month in Lisbon, Portugal.

"The Peruvian people deserve to observe the official naming of Machu Picchu as one of the world’s new 7 wonders. I am positive that it will be joyously seen in every Peruvian household and at the same time, represent a new period of tourism industry growth which will benefit every Peruvian," Bendezu said optimistically.

Just last week, the New7Wonders Foundation revealed that Machu Picchu was among the favorites as it was firmly placed within in the top 10, along with (in alphabetical order) the Acropolis (Greece), Chichen Itza (Mexico), Christ Redeemer (Brazil), Easter Island statues (Chile), the Eiffel Tower (France), the Great Wall of China, Petra (Jordan), the Roman Coliseum (Italy), and the Taj Mahal (India).
