Peru: New program to aid 1 million children in Peru’s highlands

(LIP-ir) — This morning, President Alan Garcia will launch the program "Crecer", a 1 billion-soles program targeted at 1 million children under the age of five and 150 thousand pregnant women living in extreme poverty in Peru.

President Alan Garcia and Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo will begin the program in Huánuco, where they will be given the key to the city, while the Minister of Women, Virginia Borra begins the program in Ápurimac, Peru.

"Crecer" is to begin in Huánuco and Apurímac, helping 219 thousand children, it is planned for the program to progressively extend to Puno, the Amazon, Ayacucho, Cusco and Huancavelica.

Prime Minister del Castillo has stated that the program’s objective is to reduce poverty and malnutrition among children.

"Crecer", which is to spread to 811 districts in Peru, is a fusion of 82 smaller social programs which were already taking place, now it is the government’s program which is targeted at 1 million children under the age of 5.
