Teacher’s Union to end Strike in Peru

(LIP-ir)  —  Education Minister José Antonio Chang was pleased to hear of Peru’s teacher’s union’s (SUTEP) plan to end the strike that began July 5. SUTEP leader Luis Muñoz has stated that today they will announce whether the strike is to end or not. He reported that 12 of the 26 SUTEP branches have already voted on the matter.

Peru’s Flour producers ask for tax cuts

After Peru’s Government’s announcement to lower the tax on the importation of flour to nothing, President of the Mills Committee for the National Wheat Industry, Alejandro Daly requested for the same arrangement to be made on the importation tax of the wheat itself. Daly explained that currently a 10 percent tax on the importation of wheat is paid and it would not be fair to lower the importation tax on just flour. He added that it would be "economically irrational."

Peru is to play the United States in women’s volleyball

Peru’s hopes of a gold medal were shattered yesterday as Cuba defeated the women’s volleyball team 3-0. With much taller players and more powerful spikes, Cuba defeated Peru in all 3 sets 25-14, 25-23, 25-22. Peru’s women will now battle it out with the United States for a bronze medal and third place in the Pan American Games 2007. Peru is scheduled to play today at 11 a.m. (time in Peru).

Care for the tourist campaign

Before Independence day holiday’s, Peru’s state-run promotional agency, PromPeru is making the final adjustments to re-launch its "Care for the tourist" campaign. The campaign’s main objective is to help Peruvians become aware of the advantages a tourist, who is happy with a country and its people, brings. The campaign in directed towards people who provide services and the citizens in touristic areas so that they will have a friendlier and more respectful attitude.

Peru Pricing Bonds Today

Peru is out with local currency offerings expected to be priced today, Thursday. Peru is doing a novel 30-year PEN-denominated bond with guidance in the 6.90% area, via Citi.
