The lack of control towards tourisms can create a with time a un reversible
damage in the historic cities of the world, if there is no equilibrium
between Tourism and patrimony. This warning was yesterday made by the president of the Organization "Cities Patrimony of Humanity" (OCMP), George Giannopoulos. He expressed his concern for many cities all around of the world about this subject.
Giannopoulos also mentioned the city of Cusco as a good example to follow due to the great participation of the citizens in the preservation of the natural resources, monuments and their live culture. He also declared that tourism is a dynamic process and that it is necessary to find a different solution for each city. This means seeking for a combination of tourism and preservation of patrimony. Another aspect to consider regarding the damage of our cities is the lack of budget for proper maintenance.
The Mayor of Cusco declared the importance of the citizens in his job and also criticized the lack of interest and support of the government in this matter.
This important theme has been discussed these last days in the city of Cusco and will be discussed once more in Turkey next November between the 10th and the 12th due to the lack of an effective solution
at the moment.
