Peru’s Former Miss World Speaks on Anorexia

(LIP-ir) — Peru’s Andina News Agency reported today that Maria Julia Mantilla, Miss World 2004 stated that many of the models that have anorexia, have the disease because of the extreme pressure modeling agencies put on the girls to keep their weight extremely low.

The 5ft 9in, 23-year-old model from Trujillo, better known as ‘Maju’ in Peru, affirmed that a model’s life was not easy at all and that being part of a modeling agency meant that you had to adapt to the agency’s rules and regulations.

On the other hand, Maju stated that she had never had problems with her weight and clarified all speculations that she had those types of difficulties when she entered the world of modeling.

Mantilla told Andina News Agency, "I’ve always kept myself at 53 or 54 kilos (116-119 pounds), which is what I’ve always weighed since I started modeling".

Furthermore, Maju stated that she was currently working with Elite Model Management, the agency which models such as Mónica Bellucci, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks and Claudia Schiffer work with.

Mantilla explained she had been offered to work on several television programs but wanted to focus on her modeling career for now.
