Luxury Hotel Projects Delayed in Cusco, Peru

(LIP-ir) — Four luxury hotel projects in Cusco’s historic center cannot be completed because for unknown reasons the province’s municipality has not provided the necessary authorization, said the vice-minister of Tourism, Eduardo Arrarte.

"We do not understand the reason. Every time I have been to Cusco I’ve tried to meet with Mayor Marina Sequeiros to discuss the reason for this delay. Nevertheless, she has not agreed to meet with me yet", stated Arrarte.

The construction of a luxury hotel to be built by the Marriott chain, located two blocks from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, is one of the four unfinished projects. According to hotel representatives, the project has been on standby for the past five years.

The construction of two hotels in the colonial district of Santa Ana, one of them being built by the Hilton chain, is also unfinished. Changes in 50 luxury suites in the Monastery Hotel in the old convent of Las Nazarenas are also unfinished.

These projects will soon benefit the Imperial City because they will generate more jobs, said Arrarte to Andina news. He added that the arrival of more tourists with higher incomes would favor commerce, transport and other activities.

On the other hand, Urban Development manager for the Municipality of Cusco, Jorge Cardenas Cuba, said the hotel projects will be located in monumental buildings; therefore, their approval takes "time and dedication".
