(LIP-ir) — Peru’s President, Alan Garcia, and Lima’s mayor, Luis Castañeda Lossio, held a meeting today in which they discussed the demolition of the hovels in downtown Lima, and the improvement of plots as well as antique and damaged apartment buildings in the capital’s historic area.
The meeting took place at the Government Palace and its main purpose was to discuss the issues related to downtown Lima.
Prime Minister Jorge del Castillo and Peru’s Housing Minister, Enrique Cornejo, were also present during the meeting.
In statements made to the press, Castañeda said that the main goal of this project was to improve 460 blocks of downtown Lima, which had buildings in bad conditions because of their old age.
He explained that construction would take place on 393 blocks in downtown Lima and 67 in the district of Rimac.
Lima’s mayor stated that residents would not be evicted but would live in the new houses which are to be built. He explained that the project had been developed to improve people’s living conditions in these areas.
