The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, on Monday met with the Peruvian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Juan Valdivia, to discuss Peru’s burgeoning mining and energy sectors and how they contribute towards economic growth in the country.
She also met with Peru’s Ombudsperson’s Office to discuss the organization’s success and vision in promoting freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Peru. Canada has played a key role in establishing the Ombudsperson’s Office. In 2006, the Office registered more than 85,000 cases dealing with disputes between private citizens, domestic violence, and young offenders. Ninety percent of those cases were resolved successfully.
The day’s program also included Minister Oda inaugurating Canada’s new Embassy chancery in Lima, as well as a visit to a kindergarten in a poor district of Lima. The CIDA-financed project by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives granted funds for the construction of the kindergarten’s roof which provides services to 70 children between the ages of 3 and 5.
