Peruvians said ?NO? to the referendum

Magdalena Chú, chief of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), announced that preliminary results of the referendum shows more “no” than “yes” and that only Arequipa is in favour of the referendum.

Around 7 million Peruvians in 16 departments voted on the referendum to create political macro regions all over the country on Sunday.

The proposal was to merge 16 of the 25 departments into five mega-regions with more autonomy; the five would be: Tumbes-Piura-Lambayeque, Ancash-Huanuco-Pasco-Junin-Lima provinces, Ica-Ayacucho-Huancavelica, Cusco-Apurimac, and Arequipa-Puno-Tacna.
