US importers project strong demand for Peru’s asparagus in US market

American importers of Peruvian asparagus projected a strong demand for this product in the U.S. market, the Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association (PAIA) said on Wednesday.

The PAIA is a not-for-profit association gathering 29 U.S. companies and 3 Peruvian companies that import fresh asparagus from Peru to that market.

"The higher volumes of asparagus from Peru should arrive in U.S. in September, October and November", said PAIA coordinator in Miami (Florida), Priscilla Lleras.

She added that in 2007 the United States imported nearly 124 million kilograms of asparagus, of which 56 percent came from Peru.

"This year, an eight to ten percent increase is expected in the exports of Peruvian asparagus to the United States compared with last year," she said.
