Peru, China to speed up bilateral free trade negotiations

Peru and China will speed up talks on reaching a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries to have a pact signed before November this year, said the country’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Mercedes Araoz on Wednesday.

Peru’s purpose is to seal this trade deal in November, seizing the opportunity that Chinese president Hu Jintao will visit Lima to attend the Leaders’ Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum.

Araoz said that last week she had a bilateral meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Chen Deming, during her participation in the Mini-Ministerial Meeting at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva (Switzerland).

Both ministers agreed to strengthen dialogue at all levels, so that they can overcome every obstacle and make further progress in the negotiation process.

She mentioned that Peru’s vice-minister of Foreign Trade, Eduardo Ferreyros would visit China to discuss in depth the topics that are in progress and those hampered.
