United Nations declares 2008 the ?International Year of Potatoes?

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has declared 2008 the "International Year of the potatoes", after accepting the Peruvian initiative presented in the 33° Session of the General Conference, held in Rome.

According to the Peruvian Chancellor, this national initiative was presented to demonstrate that the potato is an important food item in the diet of the world’s population and to open for special meetings at international, regional and national level to promote the culture and consumption of the potato. The Peruvian Ambassador in Italy, Harold Forsyth Mejía, said that this resolution places the world-wide attention on the potato and the fight against poverty in countryside
