The body of Seth Thomas was found last weekend in Cuzco after he attempted to cross a mountaintop.

While attempting to climb Cerro Picol in Cuzco, US student and mission worker Seth Thomas did not return at sundown as he had planned. A search party began last Saturday and his body was found Sunday. It was reported that he fell from a ledge during the hike, perhaps due to reduced visibility during the later part of the afternoon.

Seth Thomas was a medical student from South Carolina who was working as a translator for the rural poor on a mission trip through a program called CerviCusco, which delivers cervical cancer prevention and treatment for women as well as oral care, according to WRDW.

His grandfather, Charlie Funderburk, a US military veteran who served in both the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, spoke to his local press, saying “I wish that I was half the man my grandson was, he died like he lived. Helping people.”
