The Oslo-based NGO Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), commissioned by the governments of Peru and Chile to demine their common border, will begin its work on Monday, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

The ministry said the team of 29 international experts will work in the area for about two months.

The demining process will be carried out under the terms and conditions laid down in the official circulars issued on June 1 and September 27 this year, the ministry added.

Upon completion of its work, the NGO will ensure that the area designated by the two governments has been cleared of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, in the vicinity of the Quebrada de Escritos ravine, where landmines were washed out on the shores of the Pacific during heavy floods in February 2012.

The area cleared is to be handed over to the coordination body consisting of representatives from the governments of Chile and Peru by December 17, 2012.
