280 people were hospitalized due to food poisoning from eating pollo a la brasa, in the city of Sullana, Piura, earlier this week.
Local doctors said patients – which included children, and pregnant women – all arrived at the hospital with symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
According to RPP, all patients reported eating at the Cali Cali grilled chicken restaurant.
Gloria Castillo Carnero, one of victims of the food poisoning, said 10 members of her family started feeling sick after having dinner at Cali Cali.
The large quantity of patients overcrowded local hospitals, and forced some, like the Hospital de Apoyo II, to place tents and beds outside in order to treat patients.
The food poisoning is believed to be due to either spoiled chicken or mayonnaise. However, Piura’s regional health officials said the cause of the food poisoning was still unknown, but said an investigation was underway.
