Peru: 48 children died from freezing temperatures in Puno, this year

This year 48 children under the age of five have died due to freezing temperatures in Puno, according to Fredy Passara Ceballos, an official at Puno’s Regional Health Directorate.

Passara said most of the deaths occurred in the cities of Juliaca-San Román (27 deaths), Azángaro (7), Carabaya (6), and Puno (3).

According to local radio RPP, this year Puno doctors have so far treated 77,644 children who were suffering from acute respiratory infections, and 124,000 children who were suffering from pneumonia.

Several deaths, Passara said, were due to families being carless about a child’s cold.
