Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Rafael Roncagliolo said Monday that the country was aiming for a constructive relationship with Chile.

In an interview with local radio RPP, Roncagliolo Peru would do everything in its power to avoid any issues that could ‘derail’ the maritime dispute between both countries, which will be heard by the International Court of Justice later this year.

“This government is in favor of Latin American integration […] this includes Chile. We aspire to have the best possible relationship with Chile, a very constructive relationship,” Roncagliolo was quoted as saying.

The minister added that although the maritime dispute could possible “provoke tensions” between both countries, Peru, he said, would handle the issue calmly.

"We are optimistic about the strength of our arguments and it would be a mistake to accept or favor events that would affect the possibility that this process runs calmly,” he added.
