Visitors hoping to get a last-minute hotel room for Peru’s most famous Semana Santa celebration will be out of luck.
That’s because every hotel room in the city of Ayacucho has been booked, according to regional tourism officials.
The city’s 3,000 rooms were fully booked for April 5th-8th as of last week. Some 20,000 visitors are expected to fill the city this year, an increase of 2,000 over last year.
Ayacucho has the most traditional Holy Week celebration in Peru, including visits to churches, religious processions, and more. The celebration is also linked with agricultural exhibitions, art, dance and musical celebrations, and a gastronomic fair.
For visitors who have not yet made a reservation at a hotel, regional officials are working to identify local families with rooms to rent for visitors.
The city’s 3000 hotel rooms have already been reserved for April 5th – 8th.
