Peru: cold waves kill 43 children in Puno

Puno’s cold waves have killed 43 children this year, according to Puno’s regional directorate.

According to the report, cited by local radio RPP, all of the victims were under 5 years of age.

The children died due to cold-induced pneumonia, after temperatures in several Puno regions dropped to 15 degrees below zero, RPP reported.

The region’s health center reportedly treated over 69,616 patients suffering from respiratory illnesses, and 1,046 cases of pneumonia.

The freezing temperatures, the region said, have killed 25 children in the province of Juliaca-San Roman, 6 children in Carabaya, 5 children in Azangaro, 3 children in Puno, and one child in the provinces of Chucuito, El Collao, Lampa, and Melgar.

Meanwhile, Arequipa has said 13 children died from respiratory illnesses this year.

Local officials said they have treated over 1,400 small children with cases of pneumonia.
