Antauro Humala is once again the center of controversy, after a leaked video showed him leaving prison during Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2011.
Local media had previously reported that Humala had suffered from kidney problems, and taken to a hospital during the holidays.
The video, made public by Peru21, shows Humala – President Ollanta Humala’s brother – walking out of the prison, in seemingly good health conditions, and boarding an ambulance.
However, unnamed prison sources told the daily that according to the video’s time-stamps, Humala did not go directly to the hospital.
Humala, the daily said, was likely taken to his girlfriend’s house, during the holidays.
Jose Luis Perez Guadalupe, head of the country’s national prison institute (INPE), said no security protocols had been violated during Humala’s hospital visit, and said the leaked video was “completely manipulated”.
"The video is a hoax, the dates have been changed,” Perez said according to El Comercio. “I’ll show the original video."
Meanwhile, President Humala refused to comment on the matter, and only said he continued to back Perez as INPE’s director.
"I repeat that as a government we do not mix family issues with issues of the state, and that other case corresponds to the head of the INPE, who is working, and who has my trust,” President Humala said.
Antauro Humala, a former army major, was imprisoned in September 2009 for his role in the killing of four police officers during the takeover of a police station in the southern Andean town of Andahuaylas in 2005.
Humala was found guilty on six charges, including voluntary manslaughter, rebellion and kidnapping
