Peru fights for spot in U-20 World Cup, after loss against Colombia

Peru’s national Under-20 soccer team lost 1-0 against Colombia on Sunday afternoon, during the second round of the South American U-20 Championship in Argentina.

Juan Quintero scored for Colombia 18 minutes into the first half, thanks to a penalty kick awarded after Peruvian Diego Chavez touched the ball with his hand.

The Colombian side managed to retain its one goal lead throughout the match, despite heavy pressure from the red and white team.

Peru played an overall good match, with a high rate of ball possession, but failed to transform their control into a goal.

The top 4 teams of the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Turkey

In order for Peru to qualify for the World Cup, the team will have to win its two remaining matches, according to local newspaper El Comercio.

Peru will face Ecuador on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. local time, followed by a final match against Chile on Sunday.

The Peruvian squad has also been embroiled in controversy, following >allegations that one of the players was actually a 25-year-old Ecuadorian.
