Peru: Fujimori hospital photo generates controversy

A photograph of former President Alberto Fujimori lying in a hospital bed has swept the internet, generating controversy among Peruvians.

The photograph was made public by former Congressman Carlos Raffo, according to local radio RPP. "A picture is worth more than a thousand lies," Raffo wrote on his Twitter account, after publishing the photo.

>The photograph became public days after >Fujimori’s family filed a request for a humanitarian pardon for the former president, who according to his doctors is currently battling cancer of the tongue.

Fujimori is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence on charges related to corruption and human rights abuses. The pardon request has been seen as controversial by many Peruvians, some of whom have argued Fujimori is not as sick as his family say.

Meanwhile, Fujimori’s doctor has said that although he is not terminally ill, he is a high-risk patient.

"We hope that this humanitarian pardon, made with medical opinions, is resolved with human opinions," Keiko Fujimori, the former president’s daughter, said last week.

>According to a recent survey carried out by Datum International, > 59 percent of Peruvians approve of a pardon for the former president.
