Peruvian Ombudsman Eduardo Vega said Wednesday that former President Alberto Fujimori should undergo at least two medical exams before the government decides on whether to grant him a humanitarian pardon.

“I ask for prudence and patience on this matter,” Vega said, according to El Comercio.

“There should be not just one exam, there should be at least two tests that can be examined very carefully, as well as technically and objectively.”

The nation’s ombudsman also said Fujimori’s prison conditions are still the same, and remain “adequate”.

“In 2008 [the Ombudsman’s Office]issued a report in which we said that Fujimori’s prison conditions were adequate.”

Vega’s comments come weeks after Fujimori’s family formally requested a pardon for the former president, citing concerns over his health.

According to Fujimori’s physicians, the ex-president is currently battling cancer of the tongue.
