U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the Gamarra shopping center on Tuesday morning.

Clinton and head of UN Women, and former Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet traveled to Parque Canepa alongside First Lady Nadine Heredia, where they visited a photo exhibit that chronicles the history of the Gamarra shopping center, Peru21 reported.

Clinton traveled to Peru on Monday in order to participate in a conference about women in power, titled “Power: Women as Engine of Growth and Social Inclusion”, organized by the U.S. State Department, the Peruvian government, and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Clinton took part in the inauguration of the conference on Tuesday, where President Humala spoke of “the government’s debt to women”.

“I think there is structural discrimination that is often invisible, but it is there,” Humala was quoted as saying by El Comercio.

“For the state the women have invisible, but they have not stood there with their arms crossed waiting for the state to recognize them,” he added.

U.S. government officials praised Humala’s commitments to social inclusion, ahead of Clinton’s visit to Peru.

“Humala has proven to be a good partner for us,” a senior administration official said. “Both in this area, which is, of course, very important to us in the Administration, but also on the citizen security side.”
