A majority of Junín’s 800,000 residents drink water that is contaminated, a recent study has found.

According to Junín’s Regional Directorate of Health, 56 percent of Junín’s residents drink water that is unfit for human consumption, Peru21 reported.

Heavy metals were found in at least 30 samples of drinking water, which were taken from six locations, across three Junín provinces, the daily said.

Furthermore, the regional directorate said it had detected high levels of arsenic in Junín’s water, last year.

Junín’s water officials said the regional government had already warned the local water companies, and warned them to adhere to the required health regulations, but said no sanctions had been applied.
