Peru loses to Paraguay 1-0, hurting World Cup chances

The Paraguayan national soccer team finally ended its 5-match losing streak on Tuesday, after defeating Peru 1-0 during a qualifying match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Pablo Aguilar caught Peruvian goalkeeper Raul Fernandez off guard, and was able to score a goal 7 minutes into second half, giving Paraguay the lead.

Peru played a tightly contested game but was unable to perform offensively and failed to score during the match, played at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción.

Peru came off  two ties, with Argentina (1-1) and Bolivia (1-1), and a win against Venezuela (2-1).

Tuesday’s loss means Peru is tied with Bolivia in 7th place in the regional standings for the 2014 World Cup.

The red-and-white team will play its next match on March 22, 2013, against Chile, at Lima’s Estadio Nacional.
