Peru: Over 700 cases of dengue virus in Madre de Dios this year

So far this year, the Madre de Dios region has reported 722 cases of the dengue virus, regional health officials said. 

According to Peru21, 546 people were infected with the virus in the Tambopata district, and 107 were infected in the Inambari district.

Meanwhile, 66 cases have been registered in the city of Las Piedras, 19 cases in Huepetuhe, and 12 in the city of Madre de Dios.

In response to the hundreds of cases of dengue, regional officials have said they are monitoring the districts, and analyzing whether to start a fumigation campaign.

>Several Peruvian regions have been battling with dengue outbreaks over the past year. Earlier this month, health officials in Piura said that >40 people had been infected with the dengue virus in 2013.

Last year Peru saw 36 deaths due to the virus, and over 23,000 infections, Peru21 reported.

So far this year, the Madre de Dios region has reported 722 cases of dengue virus, regional health officials said.
