Peru’s Chief of Police, Raul Salazar, said Monday there was no room for “criminals and crooks” in the country’s police forces, and vowed to dismiss officers involved in illegal activities.

"We will banish all kinds of misconduct. Police are here to set an example. Bad seeds should not be part of Peru’s National Police,” Salazar was quoted as saying by RPP.

“At all times we must act with discipline, and that is what we will do […] what we need is for things to be transparent, and for every officer to know there is no room for criminals and lowlifes.”

“The uniform is to be respected,” he added.

The police chief said that despite some incidents of corruption, the vast majority of the country’s police officers carry out a good job, and put their lives on the line, Andina reported.
