Peruvian police are searching for Ramon Gustavo Castillo Gaete, a Chilean national and leader of a cult that allegedly burned a 3-day-old baby alive as part of a “healing ritual.”
Four members of the sect were captured last Friday, but Chilean police believe Castillo fled to Peru, and contacted police officials in the Andean country to collaborate with the search.
According to El Comercio, Peruvian customs officials have no record of Castillo’s entry into the country.
However, Peru’s Minister of Interior Wilfredo Pedraza confirmed that police intelligence think Castillo could have crossed the border into Peru illegally.
“Police intelligence are carrying out the appropriate actions to locate and capture him,” the minister was quoted as saying by the daily.
According to the BBC, the members of the cult carried out the murder last November because the group believed the baby to be an antichrist.
Castillo is thought to be the father of the murdered baby, and allegedly convinced the mother, Natalia Guerra, to partake in the ritual.
On Sunday, Peru police said they believed Castillo could have shaved his hair and beard as part of efforts to avoid being recognized by authorities.
