Six police officers are currently under investigation for allegedly blackmailing nightclub owners in Lima.

According to an investigative report aired by Cuarto Poder, the police officers were part of a group that blackmailed nightclub owners, and threatened to report that their establishments provided prostitution and sold drugs.

The group of policemen would allegedly make a complaint against a nightclub, and then approach owners, asking them for money in exchange for dropping the investigation.

The alleged blackmail was uncovered by prosecutor Elmer Chirre, who said he found irregularities in the complaints filed against the owners of Aura, Gotica, and Emmaneulle, among other establishments.

Anti-corruption prosecutor Julio Arbizu, said the lead investigator on the case had also received threats.

After news of the alleged blackmail broke out, Raul Salazar, the country’s police chief, said there is no room for “criminals and crooks” in the country’s police force, and vowed to dismiss officers involved in illegal activities.
