Members of the Shining Path terrorist group have kidnapped at least 10 people, in La Convencion, Cusco.

Local radio RPP said workers from Skanska, a company that provides service to the Camisea project, were kidnapped by a group of 20 men, at around 3am Monday morning.

According to local media, the hostages were being held in an attempt to bargain for the release of former Shining Path leader ‘Comrade Artemio’, who was captured in February.

Ronald Bayona, La Convencion’s chief of police, said the terrorists took the workers and fled toward the Apurimac and Ene River Valley (VRAE), on board off-road cars.

According to El Comercio the guerilla group forced local villagers to gather in the town square for almost an hour, and spoke to them about the government, and the Camisea gas fields.

More updates will be posted as they become available.
