Peru: Shining Path looking for new drug routes

Shining Path remnants are looking into new routes for drug trafficking, according to a recent article in local newspaper El Comercio.

The group, under the leadership of Martin Quispe Palomino, also known as Comrade Gabriel, is allegedly exploring the Bajo Urubamba area, where they hope to carry drugs from Ucayali to Brazil.

According to unnamed sources interviewed by El Comercio, the Shining Path is also looking to attack the Malvinas natural gas plant – a main component in the country’s energy supplies.

Paul Casafranca, a representative from the Ombudsman’s office, said local residents had reported seeing unknown people passing through the area.

>“The >>kidnapping of TGP workers, the subversive >spray painting of a helicopter, the helicopter attack that left one soldier dead in Kepashiato, the Yuveni attack that left three people injured […] They are saying they don’t want military or police in the area, so they can assert their control.”
