Peru: Shining Path training children in Cusco province

Teachers working in the province of La Convención, in Cusco, have warned that children are being trained by Shining Path remnants in the area.

According to unnamed teachers quoted in El Comercio, Shining Path groups under the command of ‘Comrade Gabriel’ have been infiltrating the poorest and most isolated areas of the province – such as the San Miguel valley, Pampaconas, Villa Virgen, and Inkahuasi.

“They come on Saturdays, teach the children their philosophy and then they leave, they always do this,” one teacher said to the daily.

“We can’t report them because there is no one here to protect us. Here there are no police or prosecutors, there is just jungle and impunity.”

Once the children have been ‘indoctrinated’, the teacher said, they work as the terrorist group’s eyes and ears in the village, and look out for armed forces in the area.

According to the country’s national police, the Shining Path currently has over 40 children among their ranks. Some are the sons or daughters of the group’s members; others have been kidnapped from the towns, El Comercio said.
