>A bus carrying members of Argentina’s national soccer team was pelted with stones on Monday night, ahead of tonight’s >World Cup qualifying match against Peru.
Several of the bus’s windows were broken, but players and staff were unharmed, El Comercio reported.
“It’s an upsetting situation because the guys are friendly with the people,” said Juan Carlos Crespi, part of Argentina’s coaching staff.
“We definitely had a rough time. Police guarded well, but they were outmatched by the crowd,” Crespi said to El Comercio.
"We sensed that something was going to happen because we had a very large police escort," he added.
After the incident police said they had reinforced security at the team’s hotel.
Close to 4,000 police officers will be present at Lima’s National Stadium tonight, when Peru and Argentina face off at 8:25 pm.
