Over a thousand residents in the city of Talara, in the Piura region, have gone on strike and are demanding the resignation of Mayor Rogelio Trelles Saavedra, over allegations of corruption, local radio Radio Programas reported.

According to RPP, the city’s residents are calling for the investigation into Trelles’ administration to speed up, following recently leaked video footage that shows the mayor receiving a bribe in exchange for a public works contract.

Talara’s protests have virtually paralyzed the city, following the release of the video in late April, and according to La Republica the city’s tax collection has dropped to 50 percent.

On Thursday morning tensions reportedly escalated when hundreds of protesters took to the Panamericana Norte temporarily blocking the highway.

Police arrested 12 people charging them with disorderly conduct, but were later released, one regional police official said.

On April 19, regional prosecutor Pedro López said an investigation was underway, and would be delivered in 40 days, La Republica reported.
