Peru tied Bolivia 1-1 on Friday afternoon, keeping alive the country’s chances to qualify to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Peru’s goal came 23 minutes into the first half thanks a kick from Juan Carlos Mariño outside the penalty area, which caught the Bolivian goalie off guard.

The red-and-white played a good defensive match, and was able to disable Bolivia’s offense for most of the match, but in the 51st  minute, Bolivia’s Alejandro Chumacero cut between two defenders and fired a shot past José Carvallo, knotting the game at 1-1.

Peru’s team was made up by Jose Carvallo, Jhoel Herrera, Rafael Farfán, Santiago Acasiete, Christian Ramos; Edwin Retamoso, Joel Sanchez; William Chiroque, Juan Carlos Mariño, Juan Cominges, and Irven Avila.

The match was played at the Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz, located at an altitude of 3,637 meters (11,932 feet) above sea level.

Before Friday’s match Peruvian players had trained in Cusco during 10 days, in order to become accustomed to playing in high altitude.

Next Tuesday Peru will face Paraguay at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asunción.

The match will be broadcast live on ATV and CMD, at 5:00pm local time.
