El Toro Lake in La Libertad was polluted with 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel, after a truck carrying the fuel crashed on Saturday.

The truck, which belongs to Rusel Inversiones y Servicios, crashed on its way to the city of Humachucho, in the province of Sanchez Carrion, local radio RPP reported.

The driver lost control of the truck due to heavy fog and rains, El Comercio reported.

Workers from the Barrick Gold Corporation, RPP said, placed temporary floating barriers in the lake to help prevent the fuel from expanding.

Authorities said they would examine the area to determine the extent of the environmental impact.
