Fuad Khoury, Peru’s comptroller general, has announced that an investigation on First Lady Nadine Heredia is underway.

According to El Comercio the investigation was requested by Congressional representatives from the Fuerza Popular party.

In a letter, the party asked the comptroller to “conduct a thorough investigation of institutions and / or agencies that manage public resources such as infrastructure, personnel, presidential plane, […] which might have been misused in the first lady’s activities.”

The party also requested an investigation into Heredia’s appearances on Peru’s state channel, claiming that coverage of her activities had cost the government over 1 million soles.

A preliminary report, Khoury said, is expected in the next 30 days.

In response to the investigation, Prime Minister Juan Jimenez said Heredia had not committed any wrongdoing.

"[The first lady] is working for the country, she is a public figure,” Jimenez was quoted as saying.

“She is supporting the president, so let’s put aside the pettiness and let her carry out her commitment to Peru.”
