Peru’s volleyball team hunts for spot at World Cup

After an underwhelming third-place finish at the September South American Volleyball Championship in Ica, Peru, the Peruvian national team is on the hunt once again for a World Cup berth.

Volleyball powerhouse Brazil finished the tournament in Ica undefeated, and were awarded a guaranteed spot in the 2014 Volleyball World Cup tournament in Italy. Though Peru started strong at the tournament, they were ultimately defeated by Brazil and Argentina, and finished third.

Now, the Peruvian team is facing off against Colombia and Argentina to clinch the remaining South American spot at the 2014 World Cup. Only three teams will compete at the “pre-World Cup,” which is taking place in Argentina.

Team member Vanessa Palacios told press that “The temperament with which we play and the attitude with which we play these two final games will have to prevail. We have to get out there, aggressive, without any fear […] with a clear mentality, all set, knowing what we have to do, that’s what will win the game.”

Peru will play against the Colombian national volleyball team first. The game is scheduled to take place at 6:00 pm (Peruvian time). According to Andina, the game will be broadcast on the Frecuencia Latina television station. Peruvian national volleyball team will fight for Italy 2014 World Cup spot in Argentina.
