Peruvian fishermen block Panamericana highway

Hundreds of independent Peruvian fisherman from the port of Ilo, in Moquegua, blocked the Panamericana Sur highway in the early hours of Tuesday, to protest a recent government decree.

The protestors argue that the new legislation would allow industrial fishing activities to be carried out within five nautical miles of the shore – an area that was once reserved for the fishermen.

According to local radio RPP, the road blockage left several cars and interprovincial busses stranded.

Marco Cama, a representative for the protesting fishermen, said the group planned to block the road for 38 hours, and said they were also demanding the regional government of Moquegua reinstate a food aid program.
