Photos: Peru beats Mexico in U18 World Championship debut

Peru, the number 10 ranked team in the FIVB World Rankings, got off to a flying start by winning their opening match in Thailand in straight sets in.

Peru’s win was due to the outstanding play of their powerful striker, Angela Leyva.

Though the Mexican team is on average two inches taller than the Peruvian side, the Andean team sustained a strong attack and the girls were consistently aggressive throughout

Mexico could not return Peru’s serves and they failed to reach 20 points in any of the three sets. Peru’s relentless attack and rhythm was most evident in the third set when the red and white team opened up with an 18-8 run.

They never looked back from then on, giving Mexico just five points to wrap up the set (25-13) and earning their first win of the tournament.

Peru’s is in Pool D along with Italy, Chinese Taipei, Turkey, and Mexico. Their next match is Saturday versus Italy.
