The leading referee for the match had some words about the country and the match itself.
You may have heard Peruvians have demonstrated the ability to set off earthquake alarms while celebrating going to the World Cup after a 36-year absence. While the level of support for the national team may be no surprise to Peruvians, the French referee Clément Turpin, let people know how he felt about the atmosphere in Peru.
A French friend living in Lima posted a photo on his Facebook with Turpin and other French members of the team of referees. The text of the photo said they had never lived an experience with such passion, not even in the Champions League. A strong contrast between Europe and South America.
It seems everyone got a taste of the local atmosphere, the French referees enjoyed their time in Miraflores and New Zealand’s players took some time off practicing to visit some places in Lima.
Marchal (the man who posted the pic with the referees) also commented that Turpin apologized for not charging Winston Reid’s penalty. “Fortunately, he did not change anything about the result and the classification, but he could not have left the stadium,” the referee told his French compatriot.
Meanwhile, Peru prepares for the biggest challenge, going to a World Cup after 36 years. To start, Coach Gareca’s contract has been renewed by the FPF.
Do you think the referee did a great job during the match?
