For quite some time I had heard about this place in Monterrico that served great pizzas so it was time to check it out. The LiP team enthusiastically crossed the city all the way to Monterrico to find Mamma Tomato – Pizza Lounge, standing in a corner of the busy Avenida El Polo. To our relief, the establishment has several parking places so that was a good start.
As we set foot in this two-floor establishment, we felt welcomed as there was something cozy about it. Perhaps it was the velvety chairs and comfortable sofas in warm colors, the wooden tables or the big pizza oven that gave this Pizza Lounge a very casual look or perhaps it was the Mona Lisa that no matter where you turn, is winking straight into your eyes reassuring you that you have come to the right place.
So with this state of mind and noticing the nice bar they have at the entrance, we ordered some drinks. We had a Pisco Sour (S./ 18) which turned out to be wonderful. I cannot recall the number of times I have sent pisco sours back to be fixed, but this time it was flawless. Soon after, a number of jars with colorful concoctions arrived at our table with the Mona Lisa still winking her reassurance at us. It was a Sangría (S./ 20) that although it tasted different from other sangrias I have had, it was still very nice and refreshing. Refreshing too were the Coconut Berry Smoothie (S./12) – a beautiful pink frothy refreshment- and the Strawberry Sparkling (S./ 10) which was definitely the team’s favorite. We also tried the Green Lemonade (S./9) with hierba buena and mint that somehow did not manage to convince us.
In a wooden tray, some Montaditos Adictivos (S./14 for two pieces and S./20 for ten) arrived. We tried the Prosciutto and avocado, and the Chorizo Espanol and asparagus. The prosciutto was abundant and of good quality, and the avocado was presented chopped in small pieces. The Spanish chorizo was super tasty -a bit spicy-, and we loved it.
We also tried Mamma Tomato’s focaccias. We had the Lomo Ahumado with tomatoes (S./ 20) which consisted of four incredibly crispy and delicate focaccias, served with abundant smoked ham; quite yummy, indeed.
Mamma Tomato has quite a variety of them, but on this occasion, we tried the Amorina –one of the most popular pizzas-, we were told. The pizza came with generous quantities of ham, sausages, onions, black and green olives, fiordilatte cheese, and white and black quinoa all along its border. As we had a bite, we noticed the delicate crispy dough, similar to the one we had with the focaccias- making these pizzas quite unique and distinctive from other pizzas in town. We also had the La Afrodita Pizza with avocado, tomatoes, arugula –small leaves without much flavor-, and toasted sesame around its crust which gave the pizza a particular and very nice texture and flavor. Once again, I appreciated the delicate and crispy dough of the pizza and their original and tasty crust more than anything else.
Mamma Tomato is proud of their product and much care has been put into the making of their pizzas, we were told. Not only did they bring a pizzaiolo –an expert in the making of pizzas- all the way from Italy, but they make sure only the best ingredients are used at all times, they said.
The pizzas, we must say, are big in size and can be easily shared among two or three friends. They are brought to your table in a hot rock pan so that your pizza remains warm and one can truly enjoy every piece of it. This important detail –who likes cold pizza??- is also taken into consideration when you order a pizza to be delivered to your house or workplace. The deliveries are done on this hot plate and they will only accept deliveries that are within three kilometers from their establishments. Not for nothing do they call their service Goodlivery. Be aware that if you order any drink, beverage or dessert, you get to keep the lovely jar. Who knows… you could even start collecting them.
