Scientists warn of increased volcanic activity in Arequipa, Peru

Scientists in Arequipa have expressed concern over increased activity at Sabancaya, a local volcano, Peru21 reported.

According to the daily, the Geological Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet) has recommended the regional government of Arequipa to declare a yellow alert, over increased volcanic activity at Sabancaya.

Ingemmet said it would continue to monitor the volcano over the coming weeks, and said increased volcanic activity could result in an orange or red alert.

According to the daily, a yellow alert would require authorities and residents to implement preventive procedures, and prepare the population for a possible volcanic eruption.

The geological agency added that it had recorded 536 small earthquakes near the volcano.

Volcanic gasses, the agency has said, have been detected as far as 12 kilometers from Sabancaya.
