Sotheby’s to auction dozens of priceless Peruvian artifacts

The upcoming sale of hundreds of items of Pre-Colombian art has alarmed Peruvian authorities, Peru21 reported.

Next month Sotheby’s will auction close to 300 works from Mexico, Central & South America, from a private collector.

The collection includes several works that belonged to the Chimu, Mochica, Inca, Nazca, and Chavin cultures.

According to the daily, Peruvian Congresswoman Luciana Leon has urged the country’s ministry of foreign affairs, and ministry of culture, to intervene in the sale.

>The items, which come from the collection >Jean Paul Barbier-Mueller, will be put up for sale in March.

Among the items up for auction are a ceramic vase from the Chavin culture, as well as a shell necklace, and a funerary blanket from the Nazca culture.

>In January Peru’s ministry of culture announced it had >successfully removed three Inca and Pre-Inca artifacts from a London-based auction.
